About This Issue:

The start was a thick book Hatachi no Koro: When I Was 20 Years Old, which was written by the professor Takashi Tachibana and his student at the University of Tokyo. The young students interviewed 68 people about their memories of 20. I was amazed by the intense contents, thinking of how I’ve lived and also how I am going to live, and finished reading without a rest. At the beginning of the book, Tachibana writes about how the age of 20 influences people, saying “It is the most crucial time that makes everyone’s life which used to be formed with mere possibilities more tangible. The Major-League baseball player Ichiro made the memorial 200 hits when he was 20, and at the same age, the renowned poet Shuntaro Tanigawa published the phenomenal collection Alone in Two Billion Light Years. Although it may sound a little being wise after the event, it is not only I who think that legends tend to start at 20. It doesn’t mean doing a great deed is the most important and I’m sure our lives cannot be determined so young. I believe, however, it is worth doing your best recklessly or starting something all with your energy when you are 20.
